The construction of large concrete piled foundations for over 90 twin bladed wind turbines overlooking the Manawatu, these were installed in three separate stages spanning almost four years. Geotechnical investigations and a test pile were completed under earlier contracts as important design and commencement prerequisites, and then pilot holes drilled at the start of each pile installation ultimately determined founding levels. Each tower foundation consisted of a 2400mm diameter bored concrete pile embedded sufficiently into underlying greywacke rock, with total depths up to 12.0m. A construction joint was prepared at the top of pile concrete and following a comfortable cure time the turbines were erected allowing completion of the tower infills.
